SUMMARY:Winemaker Evening: Jeremy Weintraub of Site Wine Co.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Jeremy Weintraub of Site Wine Co.\nSite Wines is the smallest winery ever to be featured at an ESB wine event. The owner and winemaker is Jeremy Weintraub and he produces just 400 cases a year. Yes\, that’s correct – just 4\,800 bottles! \nJeremy is the acclaimed head winemaker of Adelaida in Paso. He separately created Site to give himself full freedom of expression in making wine. He sources his fruit from select vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Their terroir is critical\, which led to him naming his winery Site. It is a one-man show\, he does everything no matter how menial the task. \nThere is no tasting room\, customers find Site via personal referrals. Jeremy also sells by word of mouth to top restaurants across the country. Amazingly you will find Site Wines on the wine lists of 7 of the 14 Michelin 3-starred restaurants in the US\, including The French Laundry in Napa and Single Thread in Sonoma\, as well as others in LA\, SF and NYC. \nESB discovered Jeremy and Site through our Wine Ambassador Jeremy Allen\, who has been buying and drinking these wines for several years. (Dare we say it is a ‘tale of two Jeremys’…) ESB is really proud to bring Site to its members\, in a not-to-be missed tasting! \nIMPORTANT NOTE: This event is being held in our pre-COVID-19 location\, which is an incredibly special private home. In order for this to take place\, the host kindly requires all attendees be vaccinated.\nFor this winemaker evening\, Jeremy will be featuring 5 different wines. Wines will be available for purchase. \nFeatured Wines\n2017 SITE Roussanne Stolpman Vineyards\n2017 SITE Grenache Larner Vineyard\n2017 SITE Red Wine Larner Vineyard\n2017 SITE Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyards\nBonus Library!\n2014 SITE Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyards\n\n “Come for the wine\, stay for the winemaker\, leave with a bottle!”\nThe Winemaker evening takes place in a very special and unique Santa Barbara home with a view like no other. This modern home\, with its large arched glass walls\, features an unusual panoramic northern view looking across the bay; from Ventura in the east\, along the mountains past the 154 San Marcos pass\, to Gaviota in the west. Truly a sight!

SUMMARY:Winemaker Evening: Jim Fox of Patiné Cellars
DESCRIPTION:Most know of Jim Fox for his career as a NHL hockey player for the Los Angeles Kings and as the Kings’ television analyst for FOX Sports West. But after retiring from the NHL\, Jim ventured into the world of wine and founded Patiné Cellars in 2011. \nPATINÉ (pa-tee-nay) means to have skated in French; an act that requires both power and grace. \nKnown for producing fantastic single-vineyard designate Pinot Noir; the wine comes from three vineyards: Gap’s Crown Vineyard and Sun Chase Vineyard on the Sonoma coast and Soberanes Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Jim is making room in his busy schedule to meet ESB members for a Winemaker Evening. Patine wines are primarily only available to their mailing list\, with most if not all back vintages sold out. That said\, Jim is providing a very special opportunity for ESB. We will be the first to taste the 2017 vintage\, pre-release and taste through 3  library wines no longer available\, an “exclusive” opportunity for ESB! Six wines in total. What a treat! \nFeatured wines\n2017 Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir (Petaluma Gap AVA)\n2017 Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands AVA)\n2017 Sun Chase Vineyard Pinot Noir (Petaluma Gap AVA)\n2013 Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir (Petaluma Gap AVA)\n2014 Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands AVA)\n2014 Sun Chase Vineyard Pinot Noir (Petaluma Gap AVA)\n\nHockey is a game that requires strength\, endurance\, structure\, balance\, elegance and skill. It is not a surprise that these are the very same qualities that Jim and his team strives to achieve in the production of our Single Vineyard Designate Pinot Noir. They are committed to sourcing fruit from vineyards that are meticulously farmed in an effort to produce handcrafted world class wines. With their friend and Winemaker Mike Smith at the helm of the endeavor\, Patiné’s wines are receiving great accolades in the industry as.Mike Smith’s purist approach to winemaking promotes the fruit to fully reveal itself in his wines while showcasing the personality and terroir of the vineyards to their fullest extent. Mike Smith’s passion for fine wine led him to the Napa Valley in 2001 where he mentored under one of Napa’s most notorious winemaker. To learn his craft\, Mike travelled from Portland\, Oregon volunteering to work crush for three years before moving his family to Saint Helena in an effort to pursue his dream full time. Working alongside one of the great winemakers of well renowned labels\, a great foundation was established for Mike and his wife Leah to pursue their own label Myriad Cellars. Through his dedication\, passion and consistency for making some of the greatest wines in the valley\, Mike has established himself as one of the premier winemakers in the Napa Valley.  Mike’s impressive client list includes Carter Cellars\, Quivet Cellars\, 12C and Scarlett. Patiné is custom crushed alongside these great wines at the Carter–Envy winery in Calistoga\, California. \n “Come for the wine\, stay for the winemaker\, leave with a bottle!”The Winemaker evening takes place in a very special and unique Santa Barbara home with a view like no other. This modern home\, with its large arched glass walls\, features an unusual panoramic northern view looking across the bay; from Ventura in the east\, along the mountains past the 154 San Marcos pass\, to Gaviota in the west. SUMMARY:The Santa Barbara Vintner Legends Series: Lane Tanner
DESCRIPTION:Our first “Santa Barbara Wine Legend” is Lane Tanner! \nFew winemakers are more colorful than Lane Tanner — and we’re not just talking about her hair\, which is often dyed in vibrant hues of orange and purple. Known by many as “Bette Midler in a Bottle\,” she’s a jukebox of hilarious and poignant stories about a full life in the wine business\, and has produced some of the most age-worthy Pinot Noirs ever made in Santa Barbara County.  \nAt this winemaker experience\, Lane will be pouring six wines and ESB will provide passed appetizers. \n2017 Lumen Sierra Madre Vineyard Chardonnay\n2016 Lumen Martian Ranch Grenache\n2015 Lumen Sierra Madre Vineyard Pinot Noir\n2016 Lumen Presqu’ile Vineyard Pinot Noir\n1998 Lane Tanner J K Vineyard Syrah (Santa Ynez; poured from Magnum)\n1994 Lane Tanner Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir\nOriginally from Lake County\, Lane was putting her college chemistry degree to work by running some basic lab tests for a nearby winery when she met the legendary vintner Andre Tschelitcheff\, who began referring to her as the new enologist. Suddenly enamored with the lifestyle — seeing a strapping Jess Jackson float around the scene didn’t hurt either — Lane moved to Santa Barbara County for a job at Firestone Vineyard in 1980.  \n \nShe then made wine at Zaca Mesa and Hitching Post before starting her own brand in 1989\, making her one of the first female winemakers in the entire Central Coast to go that route. For 20 years\, she crafted vibrant\, acid-driven Pinot Noirs and fascinating Syrahs under the Lane Tanner label\, but shut it all down in 2009. “I wasn’t having fun anymore\,” she explained. \nAbout three years later\, Tanner teamed with Will Henry\, a second generation wine industry professional who owns Pico and the Los Alamos General Store. They created the Lumen brand\, focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but also Grenache and Pinot Gris. \n  \nTo read more about Lumen and Lane Tanner\, see ESB advisory board member Matt Kettmann’s 2014 feature for The Santa Barbara Independent click here. \nContributed by Matt Kettmann\n \n

Something as simple as adding a splash of soda water to Vermouth creates a delicious and sophisticated beverage. To enjoy alongside these elegant and complex spirits will be Antipasto platters with cheese and charcuterie\, and Margarita pizzas courtesy Allison and Frank Paolino! \n \nVermouth is an ‘aromatized wine\,’ a wine that has been infused with herbs and blended with a proportion of grain spirit. Known for their balance of sweetness and bitterness\, Vermouths and Amaros are becoming mainstays in cocktail bars around the world and are key components in classic cocktails such as Manhattans and Negronis. For more info on Bordiga click here  \n Bordiga was founded in 1888\, near Turin\, Italy. To this day they make all of their own infusions\, and many of the wild plants they use\, such as gentian\, juniper and chamomile\, are still foraged in the Alps nearby. They produce historic recipes of Vermouth\, including the classic Vermouth di Torino; Gin; and a number of other traditional Italian spirits such as Amari (herbal liqueurs with a balance towards bitterness).

Jim runs all things operations\, while their son\, Scott\, works side-by-side with Jacky as the winemaking team. And the winemaking is what I think really sets Young Inglewood apart from the rest of the pack.  \nIn 2015\, Young Inglewood became one of the first wineries to be certified Napa Green\, a testament to our commitment to the environment. The winemakers grow and make wine from five Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon\, Cabernet Franc\, Merlot\, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Harvesting the grapes by sight\, touch and taste\, waiting for the optimal balance of sugar\, acids and flavor. Grape varieties and vineyard sections are fermented separately to promote varietal and clonal nuances. Extended aging in French oak builds complexity in their red wines and Chardonnays. Fermentation and a short aging period in stainless steel protect the purity of their Rosé. \n“Our family has always shared a love of wine – a passion first ignited when Jim and Jacky were in college together. Over the years\, wine enhanced our lives – on the dinner table at home\, and when we traveled to the world’s wine regions.” \nToday the family works together on the winemaking. They live and work onsite\, hand-crafting the limited production wines for balance and elegance\, and welcoming guests to the Napa gem that is Young Inglewood. \nYoung Inglewood is situated on the coveted benchland nestled up against the Mayacamas in the Southwestern reaches of the St Helena\, appellation. The benchland is renowned for world class Cabernet Sauvignon and other red Bordeaux varietals. The vineyard is further distinguished by seemingly bottomless gravelly loam soil punctuated by fist-sized rocks. It is part of the famed alluvial fan that fingers outward from the Mayacamas into select sites. \nThe vineyard is managed with a site-specific mix of organic and sustainable farming to enhance vine health and balance. These farming techniques\, combined with Young Inglewood’s deep well-drained soils and mountain-moderated climate\, allows them to produce Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals of profound depth and complexity. \nAligote is the second most grown white grape in Burgundy. Young Inglewood Vineyards is proud to craft the only bottling of this rare grape in Napa Valley. Jacky’s Vineyard. 1 barrel annually. \n\nAs there is a wide range of bottle selections featured\, this event offers two take home bottle options: One option for their Estate Cabernets\, and one for the additional varietals including Right Bank Blend\, Malbec\, Aligote and Vin Clair Rose. Guests may also purchase additional wine from Young Inglewood directly.

SUMMARY:Get Hooked CSF Seafood Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:ESB is collaborating with Chef P.A. Tremblay to host a culinary demonstration on how to store\, prep and cook seafood sourced through Get Hooked\, a Community Supported Fishery Service that delivers locals the highest quality sustainable seafood\, sourced directly from local fishermen. \nLocal\, sustainably-caught seafood is not easy to find in stores in Santa Barbara. Most of Santa Barbara’s seafood leaves town\, and the community is largely unaware of how desirable our local seafood is and how much better it is for the environment compared with buying imported seafood. \nChef P.A. Tremblay will lead the demonstration which will end with a meal featuring the fresh catch courtesy Get Hooked. This spontaneous\, and (partially) improvised interpretation of the dinner preparation will be a fun\, homespun approach to cooking; utilizing ingredients available in a home kitchen\, and techniques that are easily adaptable to any species of fish. \nA representative from Get Hooked will also be present to educate members on Community Supported Fisheries and sustainability\, and the diversity of the Santa Barbara Channel! Guests will see how Get Hooked’s seafood arrives\, and experience first-hand the quality of the catch\, all while learning tricks and tips to cook seafood to perfection with easy\, no-recipe needed techniques. ESB will provide beverages.\nWhile seafood counters at Santa Barbara stores are stocked with foreign products that may or may not be harvested sustainably or labeled truthfully\, CSF’s such as Get Hooked know exactly who caught your seafood\, where it was caught\, and how and when it was caught. They provide information on the species of seafood\, health benefits\, and even a short bio of the fisherman. Their passion is bringing the Santa Barbara Channel into your home! To learn more about Get Hooked\, visit their website at: gethookedseafood.com \nGet Hooked is also offering our members a promotion! Use the code ‘epicureansb’ for $10 off your first purchase.

SUMMARY:Ladies n’ Whites
DESCRIPTION:Step aside [again]\, gentlemen\, this event is for the ladies…\nBack by popular demand is another Women’s only wine tasting! This time\, we are featuring single varietal white wines! \nScience has proven that women have better palates than men\, but sometimes in the midst of a group setting\, women don’t have the opportunity to show that. It’s time to discover your wine palate in the company of other friendly female members. Whether you are a beginning taster just now recognizing your appreciation of Santa Barbara Pinots\, or a seasoned wine enthusiast looking to add to your collection\, come and take part in a fun\, girls only evening\, and let your palate take the lead! \nThe evening will start with a Rosé toast and a lite dinner (suitable for all diets)\, and will follow with a blind tasting and open conversation of three highly-rated single varietal white wines led by Debby Allen. Through the evening we will discuss the defining factors behind three varietals or regions\, using the textbook wine tasting criteria: see\, swirl\, smell\, sip…(and then sip some more). \nDebby Allen\, who is leading the tasting\, was a key figure in Cencibel\, a women only wine group in Philadelphia\, PA; (named for the grape as well as for its intended “sensible” meaning). Cencibel was dedicated to the appreciation of Fine Wine And Food in the company of other passionate women\, and today Debby continues to foster friendships and wine appreciation through her group led tastings in Santa Barbara. \nGreat wine\, great company\, lots of fun…and a few giggles.

SUMMARY:ESB Cigar Night: Rolling Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:…It’s said that Mark Twain smoked as little as 22 cigars a day. He was supposedly quoted as saying…\n“If smoking is not allowed in Heaven\, I shall not go.”\n For this educational\, interactive and eye opening event (suitable for cigar smokers and non-smokers alike)\, ESB is bringing in Edward Carmona\, a LA-based Torcedor (Cuban for “one who twists”) who specializes in the art and craft of cigar rolling. \nOur own Master Cigar roller will guide guests through the craft of cigar rolling\, and all will observe cigars being created right in front of their eyes (while enjoying cigars and beverages).  After the demonstration\, cigars will continually be crafted and even customized by strength\, flavor\, or by beverage pairing. Those brave enough will even have the opportunity to hand roll their own\, (even the non-smokers).The assortment of cigars will include an array of styles\, blends and strengths\, including the full-bodied Aged Maduro dark wrappers. With a focus on the cuban style\, Edward will explain the history and art of cigar making\, from the blends and fillers\, styles\, types of leaves and wrappers\, to the range of flavors from light to dark\, and light-bodied to deeper-bodied. El Canito Cigars are made with a quality blend of premium tobacco leaves from the Dominican Republic\, where some of the highest quality tobacco is grown. This ensures the quality of the tobacco and an aromatic and flavorful smoke of their Natural and Connecticut Shade as well as their Maduro cigars. \nThere are two ticket options for this experience\, the Full Cigar Experience and the Social Expericene (non-smoking). Those who opt for the full Cigar Experience will receive two cigars throughout the evening: one to smoke during the event and demonstration\, and another to either take home\, or smoke that evening as well. Additional cigars may be purchased at the event! ESB will provide a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages\, as well as small bar bites. The spirit selection will be based on the evening’s cigar selection\, and will include Whiskeys\, Liqueurs\, and other Spirits; to ensure harmony between cigars and beverages. \nWhether you are a seasoned cigar-smoker\, or a friend or significant other to one who appreciates this century old art form\, join us for this educational\, fun\, and social evening.

Lepiane Wines\nFrom farm to kitchen…join us for a special Chef’s table dinner…At this exclusive member’s only event\, Michelin Starred Chef Massimo Falsini is collaborating with ESB once again to offer members an immersive and enlightening dinner experience. This dinner will feature dishes that are not only on the menu at his fine dining restaurant\, but also those that have been inspired by the open minds (and palates) of the members of Epicurean Santa Barbara. Guests will find the courses range from timeless to modern; flavors classic to bold; techniques ancient to cutting-edge\, all executed through the mastery and vision of a true culinary artist. \nAnd what is a dinner without a little….wine?\nJoining us at Chef Massimo’s Dinner will be Winemaker Alison Thomson of L.A. Lepiane Wines! Alison’s winemaking style applies traditional Italian methods with the fresh\, bold characteristics that make California winemakers legendary. Just as Chef Massimo’s menu is an amalgamation of his Italian heritage\, technique\, and experience\, Alison’s wines reflect her Italian ancestry with the modernity of California winemaking. In all aspects\, this dinner celebrates the blend of Italian tradition and California style! Additionally\, Alison Thomson is the winemaker for Two Wolves’ Wine (Alicia Moore’s\, a.k.a. Pink’s wine label). Alison’s love for winemaking began in Barolo\, Italy\, where she met the legendary Angelo Gaja and tasted nebbiolos from as far back as 1989. The next year\, she returned to Piedmont for an internship under Sergio Germano\, and later worked a harvest at Sine Qua Non with winemaker Manfred Krankl. Her career continued at Palmina Wines\, where she made Italian varietal wines under Steve Clifton from 2008 to 2011\, and eventually to Samsara as well.  \nphoto by Paul Wellman \nIn her own words…. \n“L.A. Lepiane Wines was established in 2013 with the simple goal of crafting vibrant\, exciting\, balanced wines made by my own two hands. The name of my project is a nod to my great grandfather\, Luigi A. Lepiane\, who came from Piane Crati in Calabria\, Italy with a dream of making a successful life for his family in the New Country. He settled in California\, where he established his own winery\, L.A. Lepiane. Three generations later\, that deep Calabrian love of food and family guided me through my education and career. While earning my master’s degree in Viticulture from U.C. Davis\, I jumped at the chance to work for one of the top wine producers in Barolo\, Italy\, making some of the best wines in the world. Now at home in Santa Barbara\, California\, I have embraced the region’s unique ability to grow Barbera and Nebbiolo\, alongside more well known grapes like Grenache. I dedicate these wines to my great grandfather’s memory\, my family\, and to you and your dinner table.” \nAlison’s elegant and expressive Italian varietals will be paired with Chef Massimo’s Multi-course dinner. Included in Lepiane’s portofolio is a Barbera (from Walker Vineyard)\, Grenache (Black Oak Vineyard)\, and Nebbiolo (Sisquoc Vineyard)\, and even a co-fermented Nebbiolo-Barbera blend in the Langhe style. Her wines have received rave reviews\, including food & wine critic Darrell Corti  who described her 2013 Nebbiolo as “the most expressive and best varietally typical nebbiolo wine I have tasted in California. If this 2013 wine is an example\, Alison Thomson will go far in winemaking in California.” \nMENU\nPassed Canapes\nSeppia Ink Cracker\, Vermillion Ceviche\, “Hilltop Farm” Avocado\nTwice Baked Wiser Farm Potato\, Mushroom Duxelle\nMini Dungeness Crab cake\, Old Bay Aioli’\nZuppa\nChilled herbed sweet pea soup\nDrake Goat cheese froth\, Pinot noir Pickled Fennel\nInsalata\nCharred “Garden Of… Farm” Treviso\nAged Balsamic\, Roasted “Root Farm” Pickled Beets\, Apple 3 ways: Butter\, Pickled & Crisps; Mache\, Agrumato\nPrimi in Famiglia\n“Wiser Farm” Potato Gnocchi\nSan Marzano Passata\, “Double 8 Ranch” Buffalo Mozzarella\, 30-Month Aged Parmigiano Reggiano\nConchigliette\n“Hope Ranch Farm” Mussels\, Broccoli Rabe\, Cave Aged Pecorino Toscano\nSecondi in Famiglia\nWhole Roasted Baja Kanpachi with Salsa Verde\nSeared Wagyu New York Striploin\nSides\nTuscan Potatoes\, Mt. SUMMARY:Yunnan Cuisine Dinner with Georgia Freedman
DESCRIPTION:Food Writer and Cookbook Author Georgia Freedman is leading ESB members on a unique culinary and cultural tour by preparing recipes from her newest cookbook: Cooking South of the Clouds—Recipes and Stories from China’s Yunnan Province. \nAs the Managing Editor for the award-winning food magazine Saveur\, Georgia and her husband lived in the Yunnan Province of Southwestern China\, where she studied the food cultures of the dozens of minority groups that populate that unique corner of the world. After traveling extensively through the Yunnan Province\, learning about the cuisine that has influences from Burma\, Myanmar\, Vietnam and Thailand\, Georgia collected recipes and stories that she has compiled into this cookbook. \nLearn about Yunnan cuisine and the culture\, and enjoy a two-course family style dinner\, featuring a variety of hot and cold dishes from the cookbook. Georgia will share her stories & cooking tips with the members\, and is offering a discount on the Cookbook when purchased with the event. \nDishes will include:\n1st Course (cold dishes)\nCold Rice with Beef\nGhost Chicken\nCucumber with Peanuts\nMulti-Colored Sticky Rice\n2nd Course (hot dishes)\nSteam Pot Chicken Soup\nStewed Beef with Sour Bamboo and Mint\nShao Kao Style Stuffed Eggplant\nStir-Fried Okra and Pressed Tofu\nStir-Fried Mushrooms with Sichuan Peppercorn Oil\nSteamed Rice…and more. \nBYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage)\nYunnan is the other China\, the place where the culture of the Han majority gives way to the traditions and histories of the country’s minorities. The province is the most diverse part of China culturally\, biologically\, and meteorologically. \nIt is a region of delicious foods. The area’s biodiversity and the many cultures thriving in this tiny bit of the world have come together to create a wide variety of food traditions. In addition to its amazing wealth of mushrooms\, the region is famous for its hams\, which rival those of Italy; its pickled vegetables\, which are especially popular in the province’s central regions; its many kinds of edible flowers\, which are cooked in soups and stir-fries; and its spicy chiles and Sichuan peppercorns. The province offers a seemingly endless array of things to eat\, and people from all over China travel there to enjoy its marvelous foods. In a food-obsessed country\, Yunnan is the food destination everyone wants to visit. \nCookbook Excerpt \nHowever\, there is really no such thing as “Yunnan food.” The province is so diverse that it contains a number of distinct styles\, each a reflection of a particular area’s natural resources and the cultural practices of the people who live there. In the tropical areas in the south\, grilled foods are common\, and most dishes are flavored with fresh herbs and searingly spicy chiles. Grilled foods and raw vegetable salads are also popular to the west\, along Yunnan’s border with Myanmar\, but the dishes there also reflect the influences of cross-border trade\, and many foods resemble Burmese dishes. In the east\, where Yunnan borders the provinces of Guizhou and Guangxi\, the food is milder and includes ingredients more commonly found in southern China\, while up north\, on the edge of the Tibetan plateau\, you’ll find hearty cold-weather foods as well as traditional Tibetan dishes like yak-filled momos. And in central Yunnan\, cooks combine these styles with flavors popular in nearby Sichuan\, adding lots of pickled vegetables\, dried chiles\, and Sichuan peppercorns to the mix. \nJoin us for a unique\, educational\, and interactive evening!

SUMMARY:Winemaker Evening: Stephan Asseo of L'Aventure Winery
DESCRIPTION:A cellar-worthy winemaker evening with Stephan Asseo\, owner & winemaker of L’Aventure wines! \nEpicurean Santa Barbara is extremely honored to host Stephan and his daughter Chloé in Santa Barbara for this rare and unique opportunity to experience L’Aventure wine\, normally only offered to their allocation members and mailing list. \nStephan Asseo\, originally from France\, was already known for pushing the limits of winemaking. After making wine for 17 years in France\, Stephan got tired of the French regulations\, known as Apellation Controlée\, which limited his desire to make creative blends. In 1997\, Stephan and his wife Beatrice made the decision to start a new “adventure”! They had a few ideas on where to go\, California being one of them. After searching thoroughly through Napa Valley and Sonoma\, they did not find anything what they were looking for. Finally\, they stumbled upon Paso Robles where they fell in love immediately with the area. \nStephan began making wine in 1982\, following his education at L’Ecole Oenologique de Macon\, Burgundy\, France. In that same year\, Stephan established Domaine de Courteillac in Bordeaux. He and his family later purchased Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillion\, Bordeaux. Over the next 15 years\, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker of fastidious craftsmanship and gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron. However\, his true desire was to be more innovative than AOC law would allow. In 1996\, this led him on a quest for a great terroir\, where he could pursue his ideal as a winemaker. After searching for over a year among the world’s great wine fields\, ranging from South Africa to Lebanon\, Argentina to Napa\, Stephan found Paso Robles. Stephan immediately “fell in love” with the unique terroir of west side Paso Robles. The rolling topography of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range\, the deep calcareous soils\, and the maritime influences of the renowned Templeton Gap all combine to produce a world class wine country\, with the potential to craft some of the world’s greatest blends. It is here\, in Paso Robles\, that Stephan began his adventure\, “L’Aventure”. \n“Come for the wine\, stay for the winemaker\, leave with a bottle!” \nJoin us for an enlightening evening with Stephan and Chole as they share their journey from France to Paso and their passion for elegenent and bold wines. The spirit of L’Aventure is most evident in Stephan’s “Paso Blends“\, such as Optimus and Estate Cuvée. Both wines are Syrah/ Cabernet Sauvignon/ Petit Verdot blends. In these wines\, as well as in our Rhône blend Côte à Côte\, the blending of premium varietals increases the authenticity\, complexity\, and balance of the wines. In this adventurous spirit\, we find the future of Paso Robles wines… great\, balanced red blends. \n\n  \nFeatured Wines\nEstate Rosé 2017 – $32.00\nOptimus Red Blend 2016 – $56.00\nCôte a Côte GSM 2016 – $98.00\nEstate Cuvée 2016 – $108.00\nPlus an additional library Cuvée that Stephan will bring to the tasting!\n \nThe Winemaker evening takes place in a very special and unique Santa Barbara home with a view like no other. This modern home\, with its large arched glass walls\, features an unusual panoramic northern view looking across the bay; from Ventura in the east\, along the mountains past the 154 San Marcos pass\, to Gaviota in the west. Truly a sight!

SUMMARY:Ladies n’ Reds
DESCRIPTION:Join the waitlist now! Click here to email ESB! \nStep aside\, gentlemen\, this event is for the ladies…\nScience has proven that women have better palates than men\, but sometimes in the midst of a group setting\, women don’t have the opportunity to show that. It’s time to discover your wine palate in the company of other friendly female members. Whether you are a beginning taster just now recognizing your appreciation of Santa Barbara Pinots\, or an seasoned wine enthusiast looking to add to your collection\, come and take part in a fun\, girls only evening\, and let your palate take the lead! \nDebby Allen\, who is leading the tasting\, was a key figure in Cencible\, a women only wine group in Philadelphia\, PA; (named for the grape as well as for its intended “sensible” meaning). Cencibel was dedicated to the appreciation of Fine Wine And Food in the company of other passionate women\, and today Debby continues to foster friendships and wine appreciation through her group led tastings in Santa Barbara. \nThe evening will start with a Rosé toast and a dinner spread (suitable for all diets)\, and will follow with a blind tasting and open conversation of three highly-rated red wines. Through the evening we will discuss the defining factors behind three varietals or regions\, using the textbook wine tasting criteria: see\, swirl\, smell\, sip…. (And then sip some more). \nGreat wine\, great company\, lots of fun…and a few giggles.

SUMMARY:Pair and Share Series: New World Cabernet under $60
DESCRIPTION:Pair and Share Series: New World Cabernet!\nPair and Share Events are intimate dinners where 8-10 members come together with Amy and Keith or other ESB ambassadors as a group to share something: either a certain style of wine\, sometimes beer\, or a spirit. Each event will have a theme; for example\, Favorite California Zinfandels under $40\, Regional Brews\, or Favorite Sipping Tequilas. Dinners occur every other month. For August\, the theme is New World Cabernet Sauvignons that retail for $40-60.

\nGuests will bring a theme appropriate bottle of wine (1 bottle per couple). A food menu will be determined by ESB and designed to pair with the wine. Guests will provide the name of their wine prior to the event. ESB will then send the proposed menu to the attendees\, and each guest will choose a dish to bring. The pairings are suggestions; but if you choose a salad course; then stick with bringing a salad\, even if it differs from the proposed menu. ESB will have staff on hand to help plate and serve the dishes. Heating\, tossing\, broiling? Just bring your instructions and we have it covered!

Throughout the evening\, each guest will share with the group the story behind the bottle\, and enjoy the company of members with similar interests in wine\, beer\, and spirits.

These events not only offer opportunities for members to experience recommendations first hand\, but it’s a great way to get to know one another on a personal basis. Our focus is food and beverage\, but after all\, we are a social club…an Epicurean social club. Registration fee for the dinner covers kitchen assistance\, setup/clean up and administration. \nDon’t want to cook? \nGreat! Call up our friends at C’est Cheese\, Tino’s or Whole Foods and have them put together a cheese\, charcuterie\, or apertivo platter; or order a dish from your favorite restaurant. \nComing on your own?\nAwesome! Don’t think for a minute that this is just for couples. \nWine? Well… what’s the price range?\nWe’ll determine this event by event. Typically for wine and spirits we’ll request a range (i.e.Under $40\, Between $100-$125\, etc.).

SUMMARY:Winemaker Dinner: Matt Dees of Jonata\, Hilt\, and The Paring
DESCRIPTION:Join ESB on a beautiful summer evening at a private home for great food\, wonderful wine\, and a chance to connect with a visionary winemaker.\nTo celebrate one of the top winemakers in California\, Epicurean Santa Barbara is elevating it’s monthly Winemaker Evening to a Winemaker Dinner featuring Matt Dees of Jonata (sister winery to Screaming Eagle).  We are honored that Matt is collaborating with ESB\, as his wines are not only in high demand\, but are typically allocated for club members only. \n1 Winemaker + 3 labels + 1 Amazing Ranch = A special Winemaker Dinner with ESB!\nThe evening will begin with a Reception featuring The HILT Chardonnay and The Paring Red\, at which time Matt will share his story with guests as they enjoy each wine paired with chef-crafted appetizers. The evening will then progress to a 4 course seated dinner featuring plated and family style dishes created by Chefs Nick Bodden and Ron Allen\, the guys behind the inventive Beefhearts culinary team; who will be utilizing Dees’ Estate Olive Oil\, “La Paz”\, his ranch’s local honey\, and a lamb provided by the Dee’s ranch. \nFeatured Wines\n2015 The HILT Chardonnay\n2014 The Paring Red\n2015 The HILT Pinot Noir\n2014 JONATA Todos\n2005 JONATA La Sangre Syrah\n(Standard Ticket includes all all of the above.)\nSpecial EPIC Experience\n***Limited to 10 registrants only!***\nIn addition to the standard ticket\, the EPIC ticket includes:\nEarly entry and private meet & greet with Matt Dees\nA special pour of the HILT Sparkling Blanc de Blanc\n1 take-home bottle of choice  (The Paring Red\, The HILT Pinot Noir\, or JONATA Todos)\n \nMatt Dees was born in Kansas\, schooled in Vermont; trained in Napa and New Zealand\, then settled in the Santa Ynez\, and as of 2004 has been the head winemaker of Jonata. Since then he has been received tremendous accolades for his Bordeaux style wines. Most notably\, Robert Parker rated many of his 2007 vintages 95-97 and 98-100 points\, and Dees’ winemaking philosophy and approach to quality are known to equal that of Napa Valley’s renowned Screaming Eagle Vineyards\, Jonata’s sister winery (Whose wines sell up to $18\,000). Jonata does not share the price point of Screaming Eagle\, but it could in the future. The quality of Screaming Eagle is present in the winemaking. \n“Our focus is on structure\, on acidity\, on farming the soil\, so there’s an earthy quality to our wines.” \n \nDees identifies Jonata wines as his best professional achievements\, but is also very proud of his newer Pinot Noir and Chardonnay projects\, The Hilt and The Paring\, also featured at this dinner. Epicurean Santa Barbara also reveres Dees not only for his winemaking\, sustainable farming\, and warm personality\, but also his appreciation of music. As a guitarist and mandolin player\, Matt is known to compare his wines to musical instruments and styles; from David Bowie\, to jazz\, to Bach. (Truly a conversation to be had with our musically inclined members and founders.) \n“…Music drives my life\, so it has to\, in some way\, influence my wine. That’s why our wines are classically structured\, with richness of fruit but combining an Old World feel and a New World site.” \nDedicated to expressing a range of red—and a handful of white—wines from its estate in the Central Coast of California’s Ballard Canyon appellation within Santa Ynez Valley\, Jonata is one of a new breed of producers throughout the world who are thriving with a non-traditional amalgam of varieties and blends. With a commitment in particular to Cabernet Sauvignon\, Cabernet Franc and Syrah\, and informed by cutting edge viticulture\, winemaking and an environmentally enhancing agriculture approach to their estate\, the Jonata wines are on the vanguard of an emerging quality movement in California wine growing. \n \nMatt Dees is what you’d call a natural winemaker. Armed with a degree in Soil Science from the University of Vermont and Vintages at Staglin in Napa\, California and Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay\, New Zealand\, Matt has an intrinsic feel for wine\, from dirt to glass. curious\, earthy and experimental by nature\, Matt’s approach to winemaking is grounded in the vineyard (pun intentional) first and foremost: attuned to the vines\, the weather\, the soil\, Matt seems almost to be a part of the vineyard itself. Not being bound by the conventions of the enological world of academia (no degree in winemaking here) has allowed Matt to come to an untethered philosophy of wine. Where Jonata is concerned\, this is an important point: Jonata is an unconventional place that requires an unconventional\, open mind to bring it to life. Lastly\, Matt has another very concrete talent: a keen feel for the shapes and dimension of tannin. Listening to him discuss the tannin elements found in Jonata wines is like listening to Buckminster Fuller describe the geodesic dome (which he invented)\, or like listening to the daring polyphonic construction of Bach’s Brandenburg concertos. Dees is a winemaker who’s emotionally and intellectually connected to structure\, texture and tannin and explores these elements deeply in his wines. \n \n \n
